Art imitates life in Benito Skinner‘s new coming-of-age comedy series, Overcompensating, in which the creator-comedian plays Benny, a closeted high school football player who hopes to find his identity in college.
Skinner, first known to fans as @bennydrama7, also wrote and produced the A24 show, which premieres on May 15 on Prime Video. Writer-turned-actress Wally Baram plays Carmen, Benny’s best friend, while Charli XCX also produces original music for the series and appears in the first season.

In his review of the series, THR‘s Daniel Fienberg writes, “It’s a confident and generally funny series-creating debut for well-regarded content creator Skinner, and the cast is packed with breakout performances from lesser-known co-stars, amusing turns from more familiar stars and cameos aplenty.”
The series also stars Mary Beth Barone, Adam DiMarco and Rish Shah, and features guest appearances by Connie Britton, Kyle MacLachlan and others.
