Good Night, and Good Luck, starring George Clooney, broke its own weekly record to become the highest grossing play in Broadway history.
The production led the industry grosses last week with $3.78 million garnered across eight performances, in the first full week following the play’s April 3 opening. This also broke the house record for eight performances at the Winter Garden Theatre. The average ticket price was $303.40.
Othello, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, had the second highest gross in the industry last week, with $3.1 million and an average ticket price of $375.22 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre (which has a lower seating capacity than the Winter Garden).
Wicked was the third highest grossing show of the week, with $2.5 million, followed by Glengarry Glen Ross, starring Kieran Culkin, Bill Burr and Bob Odenkirk, which is selling well, with $2.2 million brought in last week, up $418,624 from the prior week, after opening March 31 at the Palace Theatre. The play had an average ticket price of $211.86. The Lion King rounded off the top five with $2.1 million at the Minskoff Theatre.
Several shows are still preparing to open before the April 27 Tony Awards eligibility cutoff, including Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which brought in $838,087 across five preview performances at the Marquis Theatre and played to 92 percent capacity ahead of an April 22 opening.
John Proctor Is The Villain, featuring Stranger Things star Sadie Sink, opened April 14 to positive reviews. The show played to more than 100 percent capacity last week, which included performances with comped tickets for press, and grossed $404,807.
Overall, industry grosses were up 19 percent season-to-date and up 24 percent from this week last season.
