The Helix Midnight Elite mattress: Design & materials
- The Midnight Elite has a 16” profile, including a pillow-top with a cooling fabric
- It’s a hybrid combining foams, microcoils and individually wrapped steel coils
- Features zoned lumbar support
The Helix Midnight Elite is a thick mattress with a 16” profile, and is constructed over nine layers. It starts with a 2” quilted foam pillow top which is made using GlacioTex cooling fabric, a material used in some of the best cooling mattresses available.
Next are the comfort layers, which consists of three foam layers and two micro coil layers. The micro coils sit in between the foam layers which is a particularly unique design that also helps to promote airflow, keeping the mattress cool and giving it a responsive, bouncy feel whilst still enjoying the contouring feel of the foam. The top two layers are Helix’s Memory Plus Foam while the third foam layer is Helix’s proprietary Helix Dynamic Foam which offers additional support and cushioning.
A transition layer made from high-density Helix Responsive Foam follows, before a layer of 8-inch individually pocketed steel coils which offer built-in zoned lumbar support and perimeter reinforcement. The mattress is finished with a dense foam base layer.
The Helix Midnight Elite mattress: Comfort & support
- This mattress has a medium firmness
- It’s a great choice for side sleepers
- It has plenty of pressure relief around the hips, shoulders and knees
The Helix Midnight Elite is rated by the brand as a medium mattress, and in our hands-on Helix Midnight Elite review, we agreed, giving it a score of around 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Like all the mattresses in the Helix Midnight range, it’s been designed for side sleepers, but this model is much more luxurious.
It has a 16” profile thanks to the layers of foams, micro coils and pocketed steel coils, which offer plenty of relief around pressure points (for side sleepers, these are the hips, shoulders and knees) and outstanding support for the hips and lumbar region. The foam layers also offer the right amount of contouring comfort which we are used to seeing in some of the best memory foam mattresses.
We did note that when sleeping on our back and stomach, we felt our hips dip, so it might not be the best option for sleepers who preference these positions.
It has decent edge support, and we felt it would be suitable for sleepers who like to use the entire surface of the bed. However, if you are short or have mobility issues, you may find getting in and out of bed or sitting on the edge challenging because of the deep 16” profile. We also noted that the GlacioTex cover creates a somewhat slippery surface.
The Helix Midnight Elite does a reasonable job of isolating motion, although because of the responsive bounce of the coils, you may feel some movement if you’re sharing your bed with a restless partner.
Hot sleepers are likely to feel comfortable on this mattress, thanks to the GlacioTex fabric which dissipates heat and wicks away moisture. The layers of microcoils in between the foam layers promote airflow between the layers (foams typically trap heat), while the 8″ coils below will also help with breathability.
Helix Midnight Elite mattress: Should you buy it?
Buy the Helix Midnight Elite if…
✅ You’re a side sleeper: If you sleep on your side then you’ll find this mattress extremely comfortable as your body will be completely supported.
✅ You sleep hot: This mattress includes plenty of features to help keep you cool, including the GlacioTex in the pillow top and the microcoils, which help air to flow through the foam layers.
✅ You want a 5-star hotel experience: This is one of the best luxury mattresses you can buy. If you’re looking to recreate a five-star hotel at home, it’s ideal.
Don’t buy the Helix Midnight Elite if…
❌ You’re short, or struggle getting in and out of bed: This bed is high at 16”, so if you struggle getting in and out of bed then you may want to opt for a lower profile.
❌ You share your bed with a restless partner: While this mattress does absorb some movement, the coils mean there is bounce. So, if you share with a restless partner then you may find it too responsive.
❌ You’re on a budget: An expensive option when at full MSRP, regular sales will reduce the price. However, it is still a luxury mattress even when discounted.
